The Georgian Prosecutor’s Office has begun an investigation on Mamuka Khazaradze under Article 349 of the Criminal Code for failing to appear before a parliamentary temporary investigative commission. The commission is examining alleged abuses by the previous government.
The investigation was initiated following the commission’s request after its March 25 session, which focused on accusations of business pressure involving LLC ‘Magnati.’ Businessman Jemal Leonidze, owner of the ‘Magnati’ gas station network, accused Khazaradze and high-ranking officials of the previous administration of seizing his property.
Both Mamuka Khazaradze and his political ally, Badri Japaridze, were summoned to testify. However, Khazaradze refused, calling the process a ‘circus’ on social media, while Japaridze also failed to appear. The commission referred the matter to the Prosecutor’s Office on March 26.
Under Georgian law, ignoring a summons from a parliamentary investigative commission can result in a fine or imprisonment for up to one year.
