President of Georgia Salome Zurabishvili explains her offer regarding the referendum and states that her goal is not to repeat the constitution.
The President explains that European integration is Georgia’s path, which is established once and for all by the Constitution of Georgia, and the referendum, which she meant, involves collecting signatures within the framework of the Georgian Charter.
In particular, Zurabishvili claims that her initiative is a kind of “pre-election exercise”.
“Regarding the campaign in the regions, it is necessary that the Georgian Charter be signed by the parties and you. That’s why I introduced the subject of the referendum, which was distorted. The referendum is not a referendum to repeat the Constitution once again. The Constitution said and established that European integration is the path of Georgia, it has been established once and for all!
The referendum should ask the question and collect signatures that the Georgian Charter is an action plan to save the European future – it is a kind of pre-election exercise to carry out a referendum campaign that actually the future of Georgia is being decided.
Let’s take it to the regions, to the young people, and explain what the Charter is. The Charter is what will bring us back to the European path written in the Constitution. Nothing will change that and nothing will ever threaten that. If you think that this exercise – collecting signatures in regions, explaining the Georgian Charter to people – is a preparation for the pre-election period, then you take the initiative, create initiative groups and we will help you.
We should all do the work that needs to be done together”, said the President.
