President of Georgia Salome Zurabishvili and President of the European Council Charles Michel held a meeting in Brussels.
According to the President’s administration, the European future of Georgia, 12 recommendations and challenges in the implementation of reforms were discussed at the meeting.
According to their reports, the President invited Charles Michel to visit Georgia, the President of the European Council accepted the invitation and expressed his readiness to visit in the near future.
According to the administration, Michel positively evaluated the role of the president in the process of Georgia’s European journey and in overcoming party divisions.
“President Michel recalled the historic decision of the European Council of June 2022 on granting a European perspective and once again emphasized his firm belief that the future of Georgia lies in the European Union.
The President of Georgia emphasized the importance of granting the country the status of a candidate for EU membership. The President once again expressed the unwavering will of the Georgian people regarding joining the European Union.
President Michel noted that the Commission will prepare a report on the 12 recommendations of the European Commission in the fall, as part of the “enlargement package”, after which President Michel plans to put the issue of next steps on the agenda of the European Council in the last quarter of 2023.
President Michel emphasized the need for more progress on issues related to justice reform, media freedoms, civil society, de-oligarchization and depolarization,” the presidential administration said in a statement.
