Russian Patriarch Kirill has expressed condolences following the death of Ilia II, describing him as a spiritual leader whose legacy shaped both the Georgian Church and the wider Orthodox world.
In an official statement, Kirill said he received the news ‘with deep sorrow,’ extending condolences on behalf of the Russian Orthodox Church and personally to the Georgian Orthodox Church.
Kirill described Ilia II’s nearly 50-year patriarchate as a ‘landmark era,’ emphasizing his lifelong dedication to the Church of Georgia. He credited the late patriarch with earning broad respect in both religious and public life, mentioning his role as a spiritual guide to generations of Georgians.
He also noted Ilia II’s reputation as a ‘spiritual father’ to the nation, referencing his role as godfather to thousands of children over decades of service.
The Russian patriarch emphasized Ilia II’s longstanding connection to Russia, including his theological education in Moscow and his enduring reverence for Saint Sergius of Radonezh.
Kirill stated that Ilia II consistently supported maintaining spiritual unity between Orthodox peoples and played an important role in relations between the Georgian and Russian Churches.
Kirill also reflected on their personal relationship, describing it as warm and trusting. He noted that during the Soviet era, their cooperation helped address challenges faced by the Church under state pressure and contributed to improving conditions for Orthodox communities.
