Part of parliamentary opposition summons Interior Minister to parliament relating to March 7-8 events

Eight opposition MPs summon Vakhtang Gomelauri, Minister of Internal Affairs, to the parliament to answer the lawmakers’ questions in an interpellation format regarding the dispersal of March 7-8 protests against the ‘Russian Law’ by riot police.

MP Khatia Dekanoidze said at a press conference that the opposition has questions to the Minister about the use of force during the March 7-9 protest rallies, among them water cannons and teargas, and abridging the right to freedom of expression.

“Citizens were injured as a result of the use of disproportionate force on March 7-8. Many people were arrested, and many were physically injured, including Zurab Japaridze. Special equipment was used, which did not make sense and was therefore disproportionate. One person lost his sight. We have no information about the punishment of any policeman, we have not seen any statement by any agency in this regard. Therefore, because we need answers to all questions, according to the Rules of Procedure of the Parliament, we will summon the Minister of Internal Affairs through the interpellation procedure. He should come and answer specific questions”, said Khatia Dekanoidze.

The question asked to the Minister in the manner of interpellation is signed by MPs: Khatia Dekanoidze, Roman Gotsiridze, Teona Akubardia, Ana Natsvlishvili, Rostom Chkheidze, Nato Chkheidze, Khatuna Samnidze, Tamar Kordzaia.
