Parliamentary Secretary of President on changes related to CEC: In terms of 12-point recommendations, it’s a step back

In terms of 12-point recommendations, it can be considered a step back, because only the Parliament becomes an actor in staffing the CEC, and this will be done by a single-party decision, said Giorgi Mskhiladze, the Parliamentary Secretary of the President, while commenting on the changes related to the CEC.

Regarding the political context, Mskhiladze notes that the President did not present the desired candidate for the ruling team, and the members of the majority state this directly.

“As for the process itself, in terms of the 12-point recommendations, it can be considered a step back, because only the Parliament becomes an actor in staffing the CEC, and this will be done by a single-party decision. As the President announced, the mentioned changes do not bring us closer to the European Union, on the contrary, they distance us, you cannot improve the electoral code with one hand and do something with the other hand that will hinder the inclusiveness of this process. The President herself said that she will use the right of veto, as far as the constitutionality is concerned, I cannot say anything in advance,” Mskhiladze said.
