Parliament has urgently adopted a controversial legislative package in its third reading, restricting the activities of international donor organizations in Georgia.
Under the new law, foreign grants can no longer be issued without prior approval from the government or an authorized representative. Violations will result in fines amounting to double the grant’s value, and the Anti-Corruption Bureau will oversee compliance.
The legislation also bans international organizations from holding lectures, seminars, or similar public events in support of political parties.
The bill, backed unanimously by 80 MPs, amends the Law on Political Associations of Citizens, the Law on Grants, and related legislation.
Exemptions include grants from international sports bodies and individual scholarships for education or scientific work abroad.
