The co-rapporteurs of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), Edith Estrella (Portugal, Socialist Party) and Sabina Čudić (Bosnia and Herzegovina, ALDE), have strongly condemned the two-year prison sentence handed down to Mzia Amaglobeli.
Calling the verdict “disproportionate” and “clearly politically motivated,” they described it as an abuse of the justice system aimed at silencing independent media and critical voices. “We urge the authorities to release her immediately and to uphold Georgia’s commitments as a Council of Europe member, particularly regarding freedom of expression and assembly,” they said.
The rapporteurs also noted plans to visit Georgia later this year.
Georgia is currently among ten Council of Europe member states under full monitoring by the Assembly, a process designed to help countries meet their membership obligations and accession commitments.
