Opposition MP Teona Akubardia and members of the For Georgia party Ana Buchukuri and Mikheil Daushvili demand the adoption of a resolution relating to the decision to open a permanent Russian military naval base in Abkhazia occupied by Russia. The MPs announced the above at the briefing in the Parliament.
Based on the draft resolution, which the deputies have already prepared, the parliament unanimously and firmly condemns the occupation, militarization and aggressive actions aimed at annexation of the sovereign regions of Georgia – Abkhazia and Tskhinvali region by Russia, the new expression of which is the decision to open a permanent Russian military naval base in the port of Ochamchiri in Abkhazia.
The draft resolution states that the decision poses a direct threat to the national security, territorial integrity and sovereignty of Georgia, as well as represents a significant challenge for the security of the wider Black Sea region and the Euro-Atlantic space as a whole.
The draft resolution includes a call to the civilized world to restrain Russia’s aggressive policy and to stand guard for the protection of the fundamental principle of international law, while calling on the Russian Federation, as well as the occupying power, to immediately, completely and unconditionally withdraw all its military and security forces from the territory of Georgia and to de-occupy the occupied regions of Georgia.
“The Parliament of Georgia:
Unanimously and firmly condemns Russia’s occupation, militarization and aggressive actions aimed at annexation of the sovereign regions of Georgia, Abkhazia and Tskhinvali region, a new manifestation of which is the decision to open a permanent Russian military naval base in Ochamchire port in Abkhazia, as well as the attempt to integrate Abkhazia into the Russia-Belarus Union.
The said decision poses a direct threat to the national security, territorial integrity and sovereignty of Georgia, as well as represents a significant challenge for the security of the wider Black Sea region and the Euro-Atlantic space as a whole.
We declare that the illegal annexation of Crimea by Russia and the full-scale war against Ukraine are a continuation of the military aggression and occupation carried out by Russia against Georgia in 2008. Accordingly, we call on the civilized world to restrain Russia’s aggressive policy and to stand on guard for the protection of the fundamental principle of international law”, reads the draft resolution.
The MPs call on the Russian Federation, as the occupying power, to immediately, fully and unconditionally withdraw all its military and security forces from the territory of Georgia, and urges the Government of Georgia to take timely and effective steps to reduce the increased risks arising from the decision to permanently locate the Russian military naval base in Abkhazia occupied by Russia, in particular in Ochamchire, and to respond to Russia’s aggressive actions, both inside the country and in the foreign political arena.
The resolution appeals to the international community, Georgia’s strategic partners and friendly states to take a firm, united position against the occupation, militarization and annexation by Russia.
