Georgia and its government have carried out reforms, they should be granted candidate status, European Commissioner for Enlargement and Neighborhood Policy Oliver Varhelyi said at a press conference after the meeting of the General Affairs Council of the European Union.
“This is a strategic decision that should be made by the [EU member states] leaders themselves. I think our proposals are very clear. We think that Georgia has come a long way, Georgia, its government has carried out [reforms]. So they should be granted candidate status.
Whether the European Council will do it – we will see. My message to the Georgian government and Georgian people is “keep working”. This is the best recipe for success,” Varhelyi said.
