“Not a single step back! Behind us is our homeland! The oligarchy must be overthrown! Glory to Georgia!” — wrote Nika Gvaramia on social media, responding to the court’s decision to sentence him to imprisonment.
The leader of the “Coalition for Change” had his bail replaced with imprisonment by the court, following a motion from the Prosecutor’s Office. The decision was made by Judge Jvabe Nachkebia of the Tbilisi City Court.
Gvaramia went to Rustavi No. 12 penitentiary on his own, having refused to appear at today’s hearing held at the Tbilisi City Court.
During the hearing, the Prosecutor’s Office requested that the preventive measure imposed on Gvaramia — a 30,000 GEL bail — be replaced with imprisonment. The judge granted the prosecution’s request and changed the bail to pre-trial detention.
The defendant, a politician, failed to pay the bail within the legally prescribed time frame.
