Non-governmental organizations have joined the initiative for May 9 – Unity and Freedom Day, and are calling on all citizens to gather at Europe Square at 7:00 PM, said Nino Lomjaria, Executive Director of Georgian European Orbit, during a press briefing.
“May 9, Europe Day, is our day of unity and freedom,” Lomjaria said. “NGOs across the country are uniting behind this idea and inviting everyone to come together at Europe Square to make our choice — for Europe, for freedom, for justice.”
She emphasized that Georgia belongs to Europe — and the promise of Europe belongs to the Georgian people.
“75 years ago, on this day, the foundation was laid for the European Union — the most successful political and economic alliance in history, where every person is free, safe from violence, injustice, poverty, and persecution, and guaranteed dignity and protection,” she noted.
Lomjaria warned that the current reality in Georgia — including political repression, torture, violence against opponents, impunity, political prisoners, jailed and beaten journalists, corruption, and control over independent institutions — threatens both state stability and the well-being of its citizens.
“Georgia began its European journey centuries ago. We believe that our place is in Europe. EU membership is essential for our country’s future — for the welfare, security, and development of every citizen. And most importantly, we believe the will of the people will always prevail over injustice,” she said.
On May 9, 2025, citizens will gather at Europe Square with unwavering demands for a European future.
The public is invited to gather at 19:00. Prior to that, at 17:00, marches will begin from several key points in Tbilisi:
-
Parliament of Georgia (Student March)
-
Marjanishvili Square
-
Republic Square
-
Avlabari Metro Station
“Georgia belongs to Europe, and the promise of Europe belongs to the Georgian people.
Our strength lies in Europe.
Our strength lies in unity,” Lomjaria concluded.
