Natia Mezvrishvili on Selecting Judges: Gov’t Weakens Confidence in Judiciary, Opposition in Futile Boycott

“It is very sad that on the one hand the Government deliberately weakens confidence in the judiciary and on the other hand the opposition is in a futile boycott instead of taking concrete actions,” Natia Mezvrishvili, member of the party ‘For Georgia’ said in response to the ongoing process of selecting judges in the Legal Committee of Parliament.

She notes that the party ‘For Georgia’ uses and will continue to use all possible levers to weaken the influential groups in the court and to accelerate the reform of the High Council of Justice.

“The process of selecting judges is in progress in the Legal Committee of the Parliament.

“There is a general consensus that the proceeding taking place against the Agreement April 19 is not a credible process per se.

“Nevertheless, it is also unclear why the party that signed the Agreement April 19 should stay in the endless circle of boycott and not use it mandate at least to show the vicious sides of this process to the broader public.

“It is very sad that on the one hand the Government deliberately weakens confidence in the judiciary and on the other hand the opposition is in a futile boycott instead of taking concrete actions.

“Our Party For Georgia uses and will continue to use all possible levers to weaken the influential groups in the court and to accelerate the reform of the High Council of Justice,” Mezvrishvili stated.

Earlier, Anna Buchukuri, a member of the political council of For Georgia party, also stated that the government is continuing the process of appointing judges contrary to the spirit and content of the political agreement of April 19, which is a direct violation.

She added that the party “For Georgia” calls on all interested parties to immediately begin work on reforming the High Council of Justice, which is needed to restore confidence in the system today.
