MIA: Illegal call center uncovered in Dusheti hotel, 14 Chinese citizens detained

The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia has detained 14 foreign citizens who were in Georgia without legal grounds.

In particular, as explained by the agency, as a result of investigative actions conducted by law enforcement officers, it was determined that the so-called call center was allegedly set up in one of the hotels in the Dusheti municipality.

As stated in the information, during the verification of the persons staying in the hotel, 14 citizens of the People’s Republic of China were identified who were staying in Georgia without legal grounds.

In addition, the agency says, due to the fact that shortly before the investigative actions were carried out, there was a fire in the hotel, which had already been extinguished by the time the police arrived, other persons staying in the hotel left the area.

“Based on the information received, the employees of the Central Criminal Police Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs launched an investigation into the fact of fraud committed against foreign citizens by an organized group under Part 4 of Article 180 of the Criminal Code.

As a result of the investigative actions conducted by law enforcement officers, it was determined that the so-called call center was allegedly set up in one of the hotels in Dusheti Municipality.

As a result of the measures taken on site, the police seized dozens of mobile phones and personal computers, through which illegal financial activities had been allegedly carried out, as evidence.

During the verification of the persons staying at the hotel, in coordination with the employees of the Migration Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, 14 citizens of the People’s Republic of China were identified who were staying in Georgia without legal grounds.

The Migration Department initiated deportation procedures from Georgia against the above-mentioned persons, as stipulated in the Law of Georgia “On the Legal Status of Foreigners and Stateless Persons”, within the framework of which they were detained and placed in the Migration Department’s temporary accommodation center for the purpose of returning them to their country of origin.

Given that there was a fire in the hotel shortly before the investigation, which had already been extinguished by the time the police arrived, other persons staying in the hotel left the area.

The investigation into the alleged fraud committed against foreign citizens by an organized group continues at the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

Law enforcement officers are taking all appropriate measures to identify and arrest those involved in the crime, as well as their leaders,” reads the information.
