During a plenary session of the European Parliament, MEP Nathalie Loiseau revealed that she and six colleagues, who were part of an election observation mission in Georgia, had witnessed instances of fraud and intimidation at Georgia’s October 26 elections. Loiseau emphasized the urgency of addressing these issues, stating that the Georgian people have high expectations of the European Union.
She expressed concern that the European Council had failed to address the situation at its last meeting, saying, “My six colleagues and I observed fraud and intimidation during the election in Georgia. This is why I believe it’s crucial to raise this issue here in Parliament.”
Loiseau highlighted the ongoing protests in Georgia, with people taking to the streets carrying both Georgian and European flags, signaling their hopes for EU support. “They expect a lot from the European Union,” she said. “Yet, unfortunately, the European Council did not find time to discuss this matter in their recent meeting.”
Calling for stronger action, Loiseau emphasized the role of the European Parliament as a champion of democracy, urging her fellow lawmakers to not only discuss the situation but also adopt a formal resolution. “We are the home of democracy in Europe, and we should not only debate what’s happening in Georgia, but also clearly state our position by passing a resolution. I demand that this be included on the agenda for the next session.”
In a subsequent vote, 309 MEPs supported the resolution, 191 voted against it, and 34 abstained.
