A sudden and extensive power outage took over Spain and Portugal on Monday, disrupting airports, hospitals, and mobile networks.
Officials confirmed the blackout was nationwide in both countries, with Lisbon and Madrid’s main airports forced to halt operations. “Nobody was expecting a thing like this,” said Madrid butcher Juan Muñoz, who rushed to preserve stock as uncertainty took over, Euronews reported.
Hospitals like the one in Setúbal switched to backup generators, but water and internet were down. “We’ve no idea how long this will last,” Muñoz added.
The Spanish government held an emergency meeting, and Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez visited Red Electrica’s control center. The European Commission, now investigating the grid failure with ENTSO-E, pledged support: “We stand ready to support Spain and Portugal,” said EU Energy Commissioner Dan Jørgensen.
Authorities urged citizens to avoid using emergency lines unless absolutely necessary.
