EU Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos has praised the selection of imprisoned journalists Mzia Amaglobeli and Andrzej Poczobut as winners of the 2025 Sakharov Prize, calling it an “excellent choice.”
“Strong leaders do not fear independent journalists. When journalists are silenced, repression and corruption thrive. We need more independent voices like Andrzej Poczobut and Mzia Amaglobeli. They must be set free — immediately,” Kos wrote on X.
For reference, Georgian journalist Mzia Amaglobeli, founder of Netgazeti and Batumelebi, and Belarusian journalist Andrzej Poczobut were named laureates of the 2025 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought, the European Parliament’s top human rights award.
