“Lithuania does not consider elections that have taken place in Georgia be free and fair,” stated Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis emphasizing the need for an independent international investigation to clarify the situation.
Speaking before a meeting of EU foreign ministers, Landsbergis highlighted that the investigation is critical in assessing whether Georgia is on the right path toward aligning with European values.
He said that if the Georgian government refuses to cooperate with the European Commission or blocks such an investigation, it would signal a deviation from its European aspirations.
He expressed doubts about the possibility of EU consensus on the matter.
“Whether it is possible to have a consensus in the EU on this, it’s tough to say. I have a sense that it’s rather difficult. Even sanctioning, there is no easy path to do this,” Gabrielius Landsbergis noted.
