Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze announced that, beginning March 1, employment opportunities for foreign nationals in Georgia will be significantly restricted under new legal regulations. Speaking on the matter, Kobakhidze stated that the changes are aimed at strengthening national interests and protecting the country’s identity.
“Beginning March 1, employment opportunities for foreign nationals in Georgia will be significantly restricted under the law. In addition, a constitutional amendment will prohibit the alienation of agricultural land to foreigners. Protecting and preserving Georgia’s national and religious identity remains one of our foremost national priorities,” the Prime Minister said.
Kobakhidze claimed that the government is also preparing a constitutional amendment that would formally ban the sale of agricultural land to foreign citizens. Further details regarding the scope of employment restrictions — including which sectors may be affected and how existing work permits will be handled — have not yet been clarified. The announcement may have significant implications for foreign workers, investors and businesses operating in Georgia. Additional information is expected as the government releases the full legislative framework and implementation guidelines.
