Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze has declared that the city will not evict residents from their homes in cases of redevelopment or replacing old buildings unless there is unanimous consent from property owners.
Speaking to reporters, Kaladze said that the municipality’s stance is bound by law. “The approach will not and cannot change because property rights are determined by law. We do not have the authority to forcibly evict someone from their home and demolish their living space,” he said.
The mayor noted that recent public discussions have included misleading comparisons. He clarified that situations involving the removal of individuals from illegally occupied private property, or the demolition of structures unlawfully built on state-owned land, are entirely different from the lawful protection of private residences.
“We have never done it, and we will not do it – forcibly evicting people from their own homes, which belong to them,” Kaladze reiterated.
