The expedited adoption of yet another draft law by “Georgian Dream” aimed at suppressing the activities of non-governmental organizations is yet another step back from the democratic future that the Georgian people want – stated US Senator Jeanne Shaheen (Democratic Party), a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, on X.
“The Georgian Dream fast tracking another draft law to stifle NGO operations is one more step away from the democratic future the Georgian people want. Political leaders shouldn’t fear the Georgian people. Georgian civil society are fiercely independent actors,” Shaheen said.
The Georgian Parliament reviewed and approved in the third reading, under expedited procedure, a legislative package that, once enacted, will prohibit international donor organizations from issuing grants without government approval. The same legislation also bans international organizations from holding lectures, seminars, or other similar public events in favor of political parties.
