The National Statistics Office of Georgia’s (GeoStat) recent data shows that the country’s unemployment rate in the second quarter of 2025 reached 14%, marking a 0.6 percentage point increase compared to the same period last year. The number of unemployed grew by 7.9 thousand people (3.6%), totaling 227.6 thousand.
GeoStat’s figures show mixed labor market trends:
- The number of employees rose by 7 thousand (0.5%), reaching 940.5 thousand.
- The number of self-employed declined by 3 thousand (6.5%), down to 422.2 thousand.
- The share of employees in total employment increased by 6 percentage points, standing at 69%.
The labor force participation rate decreased to 54.1% (down 0.3 percentage points) while the employment rate dropped to 46.4% (down 0.6 percentage points). By settlement type:
- Urban employment rate fell by 4 percentage points to 46.5%.
- Rural employment rate rose by 5 percentage points to 46.3%.
- Unemployment in urban areas increased by 1 percentage points, while in rural areas it decreased by 1.5 percentage points.
Gender disparities are still present in the labor market. Unemployment remains higher among men (15.9%) compared to women (12.2%). However, the rate rose by 1.3 percentage points among women while remaining unchanged for men. The labor force participation rate is significantly higher among men (66.2%) than women (43.7%).
