Geostat released data revealing that Georgia consumed nearly 1.8 billion cubic meters (m³) of natural gas in the first seven months of 2025. The figure represents a 5% increase compared to the same period last year.

Of the total, 220 million m³ was used by thermal power plants, though their overall share in national gas consumption has declined.

Imports and Spending Rise

Between January and July, Georgia imported natural gas worth USD 236.5 million, a 7% increase year-on-year. The country sources its gas exclusively from Azerbaijan and Russia but supply patterns show a shifting balance.

  • Azerbaijan: Imports cost USD 125 million, down 6% from last year.
  • Russia: Imports reached USD 111.6 million, up 26% year-on-year.

The data confirms a trend of declining Azerbaijani volumes and growing reliance on Russian gas.

Longer-Term Shifts

In 2024, Georgia imported 775 million m³ of gas from Azerbaijan (excluding optional and additional volumes) and 788 million m³ from Russia. Compared with 2023, Russian gas supplies jumped by 32%, pointing out Moscow’s rising role in Georgia’s energy.
