The ruling party’s repressive campaign has now extended to the family of acclaimed Georgian photographer Guram Tsibakhashvili.
Reportedly, the Ministry of Internal Affairs has launched legal proceedings against four members of the Tsibakhashvili family — Manana Javashvili, Eka Javashvili, Giga Tsibakhashvili, and Lado Tsibakhashvili — accusing them of “artificially blocking a road.”
The incident took place amid ongoing detentions of activists, artists, and opposition supporters in recent weeks, which many civil society groups describe as part of a broader political crackdown ahead of next year’s elections.
“They met my mother at the entrance of our building. She had gone home after work and classes — they detained her there. My brothers were on their way to stand by her side and were taken from the street, separately. My aunt is being brought here now,” said Mariam Tsibakhashvili, the photographer’s daughter.
The Tsibakhashvili family has been known for its active civic stance and participation in recent protests against what demonstrators call the government’s “Russian-style laws.”
