“Georgian Dream” says it is to support the “Girchi” initiative, which provides for the abolition of gender quotas in the party list, they announced on April 1, at the meeting of the Bureau of the Parliament.
Based on the existing law on gender quotas, at least every 4th candidate in the party list should be of a different gender.
Georgian Dream member Beka Davituliani stated that the parliamentary majority also supports consideration of the mentioned legislative changes in an accelerated manner.
As Davituliani stated, they have received consent from “Girchi”, in return that the selection of the CEC chairman will be focused on the integrity and professionalism of the candidate and will not be used for personal political topics.
At the session of the bureau, Iago Khvichiya thanked the members of the majority, because “for the first time in the parliament it became possible to talk about the case and reach some kind of agreement”. Khvichiya also asked the rest of the parliamentary opposition to support the abolition of gender quotas, as it is a “morally important” issue.
The head of the Gender Equality Council of the Parliament and a member of Georgian Dream, Nino Tsilosani, also attended the session of the Bureau. Like her teammates, she supported the urgent consideration of the cancellation of the rule of gender quotas.
Speaker of the Parliament Shalva Papuashvili said the rule of gender quotas will be canceled this week.
