Law enforcement authorities in Georgia have arrested 51 people after seizing dozens of illegal firearms, ammunition, and explosive devices during nationwide operations conducted over the past two days, officials said.
Aleksandre Darakhvelidze, Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs, announced that the operations were carried out as part of police and preventive measures aimed at combating organized crime and strengthening public safety.
Speaking at a briefing at the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Darakhvelidze said law enforcement officers conducted coordinated actions across the country, resulting in the seizure of numerous illegal weapons and the detention of dozens of suspects.
“Over the past two days, as a result of police and preventive measures conducted by law enforcement officers across the country, dozens of illegal firearms, ammunition, and explosives have been seized, and a total of 51 people have been arrested,” he said.
The operations were carried out in Tbilisi as well as in several regions of the country on the basis of court orders.
During searches of suspects’ homes, vehicles, and other premises, police seized a large quantity of weapons, including firearms and automatic weapons, hand grenades, magazines, hundreds of rounds of ammunition, and various explosive materials, authorities said.
The investigation is being conducted under Article 236 of the Criminal Code of Georgia, which concerns the illegal purchase, storage, and carrying of firearms, ammunition, and explosives. The offense is punishable by up to seven years in prison.
