On the 17th anniversary of the 2008 Russo-Georgian War, state flags were lowered on administrative buildings as a mark of respect for those who lost their lives.
Flags were lowered on the Georgian Government Administration, Parliament, Presidential Palace, and diplomatic missions abroad.
A government’s statement reads: “By decree of Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze, flags across Georgia have been lowered to honor the memory of those who died during Russia’s large-scale military intervention aimed at illegally occupying the Abkhazia and Tskhinvali regions.”
Seventeen years have passed since the start of the brief but devastating August 2008 war between Georgia and Russia on August 7. The five-day conflict, sparked by escalating tensions in the breakaway region of South Ossetia, left deep scars on the country — both physically and politically.
