The National Intellectual Property Center reported that Parliament passed a decree that makes Georgia a Marrakesh Treaty countries, making printed materials more accessible to those with blindness or any other form of visual impairment.
The treaty ensures the generation and distribution of formats such as braille, large print, and audiobooks, making printed materials accessible to everyone. The decision obeys recommendations and guidelines from the World Intellectual Property Organization.
Since Georgia has 8,224 individuals with some type of visual impairment as of 2022, the treaty’s goal is to enhance the accessibility of printed materials. In the scope of the Marrakesh Treaty, selected institutions can now adapt their materials to accommodate everyone’s needs, with Tbilisi State University and Tbilisi Public School No. 202 being the first authorized entities.
With 92 other treaty countries alongside it as signatories to the Treaty, Georgia can now exchange convenient formats.
