Vakhtang Gomelauri, GD Minister of Internal Affairs and Deputy Prime Minister, has officially announced his resignation.
In a public statement, Gomelauri described the decision as a difficult one, marking “the end of a long and dedicated career in public service that began in 2011.” He expressed pride in Georgia’s progress and reaffirmed his continued loyalty to the ruling team, emphasizing his readiness to support the state again, if called upon.
Over the past decade, Gomelauri has held several of the country’s highest offices, including Minister of Internal Affairs, Head of the State Security Service, and Vice Prime Minister. Reflecting on these demanding roles, he stated that “with the country now enjoying a period of stability, he intends to shift his focus to his personal life and spend more time with his wife, children, and recently born grandchild.”
He extended heartfelt gratitude to Bidzina Ivanishvili for the trust and opportunity to serve, as well as to GD Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze and his colleagues in government for their consistent support. He also thanked the personnel of the Ministry of Internal Affairs—particularly police officers and firefighters—for their service and dedication to public safety, wishing them continued success.
Full Statement from Vakhtang Gomelauri:
“I would like to inform the public that I have made the difficult decision to resign from my position as Minister of Internal Affairs of Georgia. This choice has not been easy. Since 2011, I have been actively involved in the movement led by Mr. Bidzina Ivanishvili, which has brought about critical changes for our nation. The achievements our country has made under the leadership of this government team are a source of pride for me. I remain loyal to this team and its vision and stand ready to support the state again if necessary.
Over the years, I have served as Minister of Internal Affairs, Head of the State Security Service, and Vice Prime Minister. These positions have demanded great energy and responsibility. Now, with the country in a stable condition, I believe it is the right moment to step back and devote more time to my family—my wife, children, and my newly born grandchild.
I extend my deep gratitude to Mr. Bidzina Ivanishvili, whose trust allowed me to serve Georgia at the highest levels. His example has guided me throughout my service and inspired me to contribute meaningfully to the strengthening of our state.
I am also sincerely thankful to Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze and the entire government team for their support and understanding of my decision.
A special thank you goes to the employees of the Ministry of Internal Affairs—our courageous police officers, firefighters, and all who have worked tirelessly to protect and serve. I wish you and the next Minister continued success.
I remain devoted to my country and to the ideals we have pursued together. I wish Georgia lasting peace, stability, and fulfillment of all its aspirations.
With respect,
Police Colonel General Vakhtang Gomelauri”
