Gakharia on ‘Russian law’: GD declares its intention – electoral manipulation

The ruling party of Georgia is declaring its intention to manipulate the elections by re-introducing the Russian foreign agents law, – “For Georgia” party leader Giorgi Gakharia said in response to the re-introduction of the “bill on foreign agents” by Georgian Dream.

“Georgian Dream intends to completely destroy trust in national and international election observation organizations and their donors to prepare the ground for the public recognition of manipulated results. It’s time to unite efforts to protect the integrity of upcoming 2024 elections and the future!” – he wrote on X.

The party deputy chairwoman Natia Mezvrishvili also responded to the re-introduction of the bill.

“Russian foreign agents law is back! Afraid to lose power, Ivanishvili targets organizations and their donors having key role in observing elections!” – she wrote, urging international partners to react accordingly.

“Georgian Dream violated another given promise today, and, one year since the “Russian Law” was dropped, it is returning the bill to parliament.

The parliamentary majority of Georgia adopted the Russian law on “agents of foreign influence” in the first reading on March 7 of last year. The purpose of the law is to discredit and limit the media and civil sector in the country.

Georgia’s western partners, including the US and the European Union, consider the law an obstacle to Georgia’s western integration.

In 2023, this step of the ruling team was followed by protests and large-scale demonstrations by many citizens of Georgia. On March 7-8, the authorities used physical force, pepper spray, tear gas, and water cannon against the participants of the peaceful protest.
