Former Georgian PM Garibashvili faces major corruption charges — court sets ₾1 million bail

The Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia has concluded a plea agreement with former Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili, under which he has been sentenced to five years of imprisonment. In addition, he has been fined 1 million GEL as an additional penalty.

“According to the plea agreement concluded between the Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia and the accused Irakli Garibashvili, the former Prime Minister has been sentenced to five years of imprisonment for committing a crime provided for under Article 194, Part 3 of the Criminal Code of Georgia.

He has also been imposed an additional penalty in the form of a fine amounting to 1 million GEL. Furthermore, funds obtained through criminal activity and seized during the search of his residence will be confiscated in favor of the state.

Irakli Garibashvili admits the committed crime and agrees to the terms of the plea agreement. The court has already granted the Prosecutor’s Office’s motion regarding the plea agreement,” the Prosecutor’s Office said in a statement.

Garibashvili’s prosecution has drawn significant public attention because he is one of the most prominent political figures to face serious financial crime allegations in Georgia. The charges have sparked intense debate domestically and commentary from analysts about the scale and political context of anti-corruption efforts in the country.
