Former GD MP Luka Kurtanidze charged with crime punishable by up to 5 years in prison

The Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia has officially charged former Georgian Dream MP and veteran wrestler Luka Kurtanidze with multiple offenses, including domestic violence, intentional damage to a family member’s property, and violation of a court-issued protective order.

Prosecutor General’s Office says Kurtanidze is accused of committing acts of violence against his former spouse, motivated by gender intolerance. The charges stem from two separate incidents in which he allegedly violated the terms of a protective order prohibiting him from contacting or approaching the victim.

On July 25, in the town of Kobuleti, Kurtanidze reportedly entered the victim’s residence, physically assaulted her, and damaged her car. He was arrested by law enforcement the same day.

He has been charged under the following provisions of the Criminal Code:

  • Article 126¹, Part 1 – Domestic violence causing physical pain;

  • Article 11¹-187, Part 1 – Intentional damage to a family member’s property;

  • Two counts of Article 11¹-381¹, Part 1 – Violation of protective order requirements.

If found guilty, Kurtanidze faces up to five years in prison.

The Prosecutor’s Office has announced plans to request pre-trial detention. The investigation is being conducted by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and remains ongoing.
