The Georgian Roads Department recently announced that a 5km section of the new Kvesheti-Kobi road will open in 2025 and provide access to Gudauri.
The full 23km Kvesheti-Kobi highway is under construction in two phases. The first phase, a 9km tunnel built by China Railway Tunnel Group Co., was completed in 2024, with overall progress at 79%. The project cost 909 million GEL.
The second phase, spanning 12.7 km, includes five bridges and four tunnels. This section, constructed by China Railway 23rd Bureau Group, is currently 50% complete. One of the bridges will be the highest in Georgia at 166 meters tall with a length of 426 meters. The total cost of this phase of the project is GEL 316.7 million.
The Roads Department has not given an exact date for the completion of the entire highway, although it has disclosed that it will be operational next year.
