EU reaffirms commitment to peaceful resolution of conflicts in Georgia

Marking the 17th anniversary of the 2008 Russo-Georgian war, the European Union reiterated its strong support for Georgia’s independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders.

In a statement, the EU Spokesperson emphasized the bloc’s continued commitment to a peaceful resolution of the conflicts in Georgia and to regional stability. The EU Monitoring Mission (EUMM), the only international presence on the ground, plays a key role in maintaining security.

The EU condemned Russia’s ongoing military presence in the occupied regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, calling it a violation of international law and the 2008 ceasefire agreement. The statement highlighted ongoing human rights abuses, restrictions on movement, and the unresolved challenges facing displaced persons, urging full respect for their right to voluntary and safe return.

The EU remains engaged through the Geneva International Discussions and the EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus. It called on all parties to fully implement the 12 August 2008 agreement and its follow-up measures.
