European Commission spokesperson for foreign and security affairs Anita Hipper commented on media reports alleging that Georgian authorities may have used chemical weapons against demonstrators. Responding to a question from Euroskop about the BBC’s recent investigative publication, Hipper said the claims, if verified, would be “unacceptable.”
“We have seen the media reports regarding the alleged use of chemical weapons against demonstrators. If confirmed, it would be unacceptable,” she stated. “Therefore, we expect a swift, transparent and credible investigation into these allegations.”
The BBC report claims that evidence gathered by its investigative team suggests the Georgian government used a World War I–era chemical agent during last year’s anti-government protests to disperse crowds.
