Emergency Management Service urges public to avoid lighting fires on agricultural lands, near forests

Georgia’s Emergency Management Service has warned the public that air temperatures are expected to rise across the nation in the coming days, increasing the danger of forest and field fires.

The Service called on the public to “show high responsibility,” and avoid lighting fires on agricultural lands and near forests or fields, and not to leave fire pits unattended.

The agency has also warned against keeping household rubbish in open areas, citing the possibility of spontaneous combustion and urging people to phone the 112 emergency number immediately if they notice smoke or flames.

The National Environment Agency also predicted an increase in air temperature on the territory of Georgia this week.

Forecasters say the air temperature in the plains of Western Georgia will exceed 37-39 degrees, and in the mountainous regions – 35-37 degrees.

“The maximum air temperature in Eastern Georgia is expected to be within 33-38 degrees.

High air temperatures are among the contributing conditions for forest fires. The current threat level is “medium,” the NEA announcement stated.
