Elene Khoshtaria, head of the opposition party ‘Droa’, has been detained by law enforcement officers, the party confirmed on social media. Video footage of the detention was also circulated online by Droa’s press service.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) stated that the investigation was launched at the request of representatives from the ruling Georgian Dream–Democratic Georgia party. Authorities allege that Khoshtaria was involved in damaging election banners.
The case is being pursued under Article 187 of Georgia’s Criminal Code which covers the damage or destruction of property.
