The Tbilisi City Court has ruled in favor of the Ministry of Finance, ordering former President Mikheil Saakashvili and former head of the Special State Protection Service, Teimuraz Janashia, to reimburse 9 million GEL to the state budget.
The decision, delivered by Judge Aleksandre Gzirishvili, concerns funds determined to have been embezzled.
Both Saakashvili and Janashia were previously convicted under parts two and three of Article 182 of the Criminal Code, which address the unlawful appropriation of large sums of money by a group through abuse of official authority. Saakashvili was sentenced to eight years in prison in this case, while Janashia received a 300,000 GEL fine.
Following their convictions, the state pursued a civil lawsuit to recover the embezzled amount, leading to the court’s latest ruling.
