The Tbilisi Court of Appeal did not satisfy the request for the release or postponement of the sentence of the former president of Georgia, Mikheil Saakashvili.
“On March 2, 2023, the consideration of the appeal of the convicted Mikheil Saakashvili and the lawyers defending his interests was completed in the Tbilisi Court of Appeal, where the lawyers of the convicted demanded the release of the convicted Mikheil Saakashvili from his sentence due to illness. As an alternative, they also requested a postponement of the execution of the sentence until his recovery or substantial improvement in his health.
“The Appeals Chamber, based on the provisions of Article 291 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Georgia, considered the appeal of the lawyers defending the interests of the convicted Mikheil Saakashvili, Shalva Khachapuridze, Zurab Vanishvili, and Valerian Gelbakhiani, without an oral hearing, and as a result of studying the materials/information presented in the case, considering that there was no above-mentioned appeal-legal basis for satisfaction.
“Accordingly, the judgment of the Tbilisi City Court of February 6, 2023, remained unchanged by the decision of the Court of Appeal,” reads the statement of the Court of Appeal.
