The Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights, Dunja Mijatovic, will deliver a speech during Pride Week in Tbilisi.
Information about this is distributed by Tbilisi Pride. The organization says that within the framework of the closed conference, the Commissioner will address the attendees and open the week.
In addition, according to the organization, UNDP head Nick Beresford will also come to Georgia to participate in the week.
Tbilisi Pride Week will be held on July 1-8. According to the organizers, the week will include closed events.
“Pride week is a unique opportunity for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer people to see each other, unite, freely express themselves and fight for their rights,” the statement reads.
The organizers emphasize that “Pride Week is even more important and political in Georgia, where influential opponents of the queer movement purposely prevent the protection of fundamental human rights, sow hatred and spread Putinist ideology.”
“We believe that by holding the 2023 Tbilisi Pride Week we will strengthen the community; we will raise public awareness; we will more actively demand the protection of our rights; we will gather supporters from different fields; we will present LGBTQI culture and history,” says the organizing group of Pride.
According to their information, this year the Tbilisi Pride Week includes closed events of a political, cultural and academic nature, including the International LGBTQI Conference and the Pride Festival.
The announcement of the Pride Week has the following slogan: “You can’t beat love!”
Pride Week in Tbilisi has been celebrated since 2019 against the backdrop of violence and threats from homophobic groups. In July 2021, violent groups, who wanted to disrupt the “March of Dignity” planned for the week, attacked dozens of journalists. They also raided the activists’ offices.
