The chairwoman of the United National Movement, Tina Bokuchava, has warned that the threat of suspending Georgia’s visa-free travel with the European Union is real. However, she emphasized that efforts are underway to ensure any potential restrictions target only Bidzina Ivanishvili’s regime and his entourage, not ordinary Georgian citizens.
Bokuchava claimed that EU foreign ministers will discuss Georgia at an informal meeting in Denmark, just as the deadline set by Brussels for Ivanishvili’s government to meet specific conditions expires.
“We had no illusions that Ivanishvili would comply with these demands. His regime has placed Georgian citizens at risk of losing visa-free travel. That is why we are actively working with European capitals, especially with Poland, to ensure that the temporary suspension mechanism is applied selectively. The goal is to impose restrictions on Ivanishvili, his corrupt elite, judges, and perpetrators—not on Georgian citizens,” Bokuchava said.
She noted that during discussions with Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski, they underlined the importance of this approach, since the selective mechanism was first introduced under Poland’s EU presidency.
