Amnesty International has criticized the Georgian government, accusing it of sabotaging the human rights of its own people.
The organization stated that civic space in Georgia is shrinking at an alarming pace. The government recently froze the accounts of seven non-governmental organizations and opened criminal cases against them on charges of ‘sabotage.’ Authorities allege that these NGOs provided funding for protective equipment used by protesters.
Unlike previous cases, Amnesty warns, this latest move could result in the arrest of NGO leaders. By labeling independent organizations as ‘saboteurs,’ the government is not only obstructing their work but also sending a dangerous message to others who defend human rights in the country.
“By undermining the activities of human rights defenders and civil society representatives, the Georgian authorities are sabotaging the rights of their own population. These repressions must end,” Amnesty International stated.
