Gamkrelidze: One Theory is Omicron may be Beginning of End of Pandemic

“Today we have a number of ‘anti-record’ of new Covid cases. 7521is a number not seen during the pandemic. The rate of positivity has also increased. The only positive thing is that the mortality rate is declining. 50% of positive cases in the country are the Omicron strain,” said Amiran Gamkrelidze, head of the National Center for Disease Control.

He noted that so far the Omicron cases have been relatively mild compared to the Delta strain, but added that people should relax, because if there are many cases at once, the outcome will be different.

“I ask the population to get a booster. One can get vaccinated with Sinopharm or Sinovac, but most of the 120,000 boosters (85%) done in the country are still Pfizer. In case a person who has gotten a booster dose is infected with the coronavirus or develops reinfection, the virus is very mild. Therefore, one of the main recommendations today is mass boosterization,” Gamkrelidze said.
