Former head of the National Center for Disease Control, Amiran Gamkrelidze, has voiced solidarity with Doctor Giorgi (Gogi) Chakhunashvili, who was detained in Tbilisi on October 9 in connection with the October 4 events.
“I express my full support to Gogi Chakhunashvili and his family. The Chakhunashvili family is one of the most distinguished in Georgia’s medical community,” Gamkrelidze wrote. He recalled years of collaboration with Chakhunashvili’s father at the Republican Hospital and praised the family’s legacy of service and professionalism.
Gamkrelidze said he “cannot imagine what Gogi could have done to justify such a detention” and expressed confidence that justice would prevail.
He also called on the authorities to avoid further escalation, stressing the importance of “mutual compromise, consensus, and dialogue for the good of the country,” adding that “retreat is not always a sign of weakness, but often one of wisdom and strategic vision.”
On October 9, 71-year-old pediatrician and professor Giorgi Chakhunashvili was arrested at his home in Tbilisi. His detention is reportedly linked to the events of October 4.
