Pawel Herczynski, Ambassador of the European Union to Georgia pointed out, that European Union is a family of 27 sovereign countries. They want to expand and allow other countries, including Georgia, to join this family.
“It is up to Georgia to decide whether it wants to be a part of the European Union or not. Whatever decision is made by Georgia, by the Georgian political elite, by the Georgian population, we respect it. I know that 89 percent of Georgians now support European integration and joining the European Union. This is definitely the highest rate in history. I also understand and know that joining the European Union is enshrined in the Constitution of Georgia. We, the European Union, are here to help, to support, and to ensure that the Government of Georgia has all the necessary support to realize this goal, but this work is for Georgians to do,” he stated.
Herczynski noted they hope that the process will continue and end successfully with Georgia joining the European Union, adding It will be a long, complex process.
“This is a process that every country that wanted to join the European Union had to go through, but everything is in the hands of the Georgian political elites. I hope that enough progress will be made in terms of reforms for the 27 member states to proceed with the next step by granting Georgia candidate status, which Georgia may receive in December of this year. Still, I will repeat again that it will be based on the progress that Georgia achieves on the path of reforms,” the Ambassador stated.
