Several people were arrested at the rally taking place at the Tbilisi International Airport. At the moment, their identity is unknown. The participants of the rally are protesting the landing of the first plane in Georgia after the restoration of direct flights with Russia.
According to the participants of the rally, the landing of the Russian plane is a matter of dignity for Georgia.
In parallel with the rally, the police is also mobilized at the airport.
The rally was initially announced by the leader of the “Droa” party, Elene Khoshtaria. She claimed that the restoration of direct flights with Russia threatens Georgia’s candidate status and is a betrayal of the country’s national interests.
On May 10, Russia lifted restrictions on direct flights to Georgia. This decision was called “humanitarian” in Moscow.
The Georgian government welcomes Moscow’s decision and says that it will make life easier for the “million Georgians” living in Russia. The government also says that only unsanctioned companies will be able to operate. Part of politicians and citizens protest the restoration of air traffic.
Three companies – Russian “Azimut”, “Red Wings” and Georgian “Georgian Airways” have already received permission to fly.
The US and the European Union are critical towards the resumption of flights.
