The Metropolitan of Kyiv and All Ukraine, Epiphanius, has expressed his condolences over the passing of the Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia, Ilia II, extending sympathy to the Georgian Orthodox Church and the Georgian people.
“With sorrow and sympathy, I received the news of the passing of His Holiness and Beatitude Ilia II, leader of the Georgian Orthodox Church and a devoted spiritual guide, who dedicated his life to serving God, the Church, and the Georgian people,” the condolence message reads.
Epiphanius noted that over decades of service, Ilia II became a spiritual leader for countless believers, working to strengthen faith, preserve Christian traditions, and support the spiritual renewal of society following years of state atheism.
He also highlighted Ilia II’s support for Ukraine amid Russia’s full-scale invasion.
“The personality of Patriarch Ilia II held exceptional significance not only for Georgia but for the entire Orthodox world. His service inspired many, helping people endure hardship and maintain hope even in the most difficult times, particularly during wars provoked by Russian aggression. I extend my sincere condolences to the bishops, clergy, and faithful of the Georgian Orthodox Church, as well as to the Georgian people, for whom he was not only a patriarch but a true spiritual father,” Epiphanius said.
