Georgian karate team wins six medals at European championship in Riga

Georgian karate athletes achieved impressive results at the 15th European Karate Championship held in Riga, Latvia, receiving a total of six medals, one gold, two silver, and three bronze, among competitors from 35 European countries.

The championship, organized by the World Union of Karate-Do Federations (WUKF), took place from October 22 to 26, 2025, bringing together around 1,500 athletes. Georgia was represented by a 15-member delegation which delivered a strong performance across multiple age and weight categories.

Aleksandre Shamugia earned gold, taking first place in the para-discipline individual kata event in the senior category.

Two Georgian athletes won silver medals: Chabuka Makharadze, a four-time World and five-time European champion in Shotokan Karate-Do, claimed second place in the senior individual kumite event; Davit Guloiani won silver in the under-20 kumite (-65 kg) category.

Three more Georgians earned bronze medals: Irakli Gongadze, in senior veterans’ individual kumite; Saba Surmanidze, in under-20 kumite (-65 kg); Sandro Iakobidze, in under-9 boys’ individual kumite.
