The European People’s Party (EPP) has issued a strong statement condemning the Georgian government’s actions, calling on the ruling “Georgian Dream” party to end what it describes as violence and repression.
“The Georgian people deserve democracy, not autocracy—they aspire to integration with Europe, not isolation,” the EPP declared.
The statement denounced the October 4 elections as fraudulent, noting they were marked by the lowest voter turnout in Georgia’s history and a boycott by major opposition parties. According to the EPP, the vote was held amid “repression and violence against regime opponents,” while recent detentions and threats from government representatives sought to silence protests, suppress the pro-Western opposition, and spread fear in society.
In response, the EPP called on the European Union “to impose sanctions against those undermining the rule of law and human rights in Georgia,” specifically urging targeted measures against Georgian Dream founder Bidzina Ivanishvili and his allies.
“We call on ‘Georgian Dream’ to stop violence and repression and to respect the European aspirations of the Georgian people,” the statement concluded.
