American Republican Congressman Joe Wilson has announced that his amendment on the “non-recognition of the Georgian nightmare” has been adopted for inclusion in the US State Department Authorization Act.
“I am very grateful that my amendment on the ‘non-recognition of the Georgian nightmare’ was adopted for inclusion in the State Department Authorization Act,” Wilson wrote on the social platform X, stressing that aligning with regimes such as Communist China, Iran, and Russia “is a one-way ticket toward isolation.”
The amendment explicitly states that no US federal official or employee may take any action, nor allocate federal funds, toward recognizing or implying recognition of Georgia’s government if it continues to be led by the ruling party Georgian Dream.
Wilson has been one of the most outspoken critics of Georgian Dream in recent years, repeatedly accusing the party of democratic backsliding, undermining pro-Western aspirations, and drawing the country closer to Moscow’s orbit. His proposed measure reflects growing unease in Washington over Tbilisi’s domestic and foreign policy course.
If enacted, the amendment would further institutionalize US disapproval of the current Georgian leadership and could add strain to bilateral relations.
